THE CITY AGAINST ME. SH-SH-SH-SH...

I would constantly open and close the window. I opened because it was too hot and I closed it because it was too noisy.

I remember my first night, I tried to get off to sleep, but the airplanes would always disturb me. All the time they would come circling over my house. I would go to another room, I would cover my head with a blanket.

The next night it was cars that were passing by that were disturbing me.

The third night was marked by the victory of our football team, when the crazy fans celebrated it. It was going on for almost two weeks.

The only thing that helped me to get to sleep in the big city was an audio book called “The History of the Russian State”. I’d put on my headphones, actually I'd stuff my ears with headphones and listen to a lonely mumbling female voice, that  told about the Varangians, about Russians expeditions... And I’d fall asleep to this monotous voice.

Life in a big city lasts for 24 hours. There’s always noise, noise, plants, cars,airplanes. In the co everything stops at 6 pm. After that there’s only sound silence there. Only dogs and crickets.

I lived in the village for five years before moving to the city. Now I’ve become a part of this enormous organism which keeps people from sleeping. And so do I.
